Roses 2012 Round-Up

So, Roses is over for another year and that’s all for competitive fixtures until the start of next term! It really was a fantastic weekend for those who managed to get down and support or play. I personally managed to get to see some Rugby, Squash, Volleyball, Badminton and Ultimate Frisbee (which is way more exciting than I expected!). To sum up how our Table Tennis team did, our 1sts team were overpowered by an extremely strong York side (with man of the match Jim Cao winning our only 3 matches) whilst our 2nds team walked all over York with VP Rowan Campbell in imperious form winning all four matches. For a full round-up of what happened, I am quoting the SCAN article written about us!

Lancaster A team lost 14-3 (Jim Cao, Liang Wen, Reeve Lo, Alasdair Fuller), 4 points.

Lancaster B team wins 12-5 (David Bruce, Rowan Campbell, Joe Breen, Kris Hawkes), 2 points.

Lancaster B team pulled off an impressive performance on Saturday night, achieving a smashing victory against York’s B team! Unfortunately the same can’t be said for the A team that, whilst putting on an admirable performance, was unable to match York’s strong A team.

When asked, the York players felt that their main strength lay in their A team, and indeed their hopes were vindicated as their A team built up a lead in the opening matches, the only resistance coming from Lancaster’s star performer Jim Cao, who swept away his opponents with comparable ease, winning three of his four matches. In spite of this, Lancaster’s first team were simply not good enough to challenge York’s A team. Although this was a disappointment, it was not a surprise – Lancaster’s coach Graham Coupe had predicted that the A team would lose, having seen the quality of York’s team, but the same cannot be said for the B team.

In quite remarkable style Rowan Campbell, David Bruce, Joe Breen and Kris Hawkes played superbly, outclassing a strong York team. Undoubtedly, with such a great performance it is difficult to single out one player, but Rowan Campbell deservedly gained the Man Of The Match award, for winning every game he played. Rowan commented that he was “honoured” to be the B team’s most valuable player: “I didn’t expect to win all of my matches, but I was pleased with my overall performance”.

Perhaps the best performance of the day, however, came from the crowd who stayed in good numbers cheering and applauding the spectacle for the whole three hours. The turnout was hardly surprising considering that Lancaster’s table tennis club has been going from strength to strength, winning the Team of the Year and being nominated for Club of the Year last year. Losing any points to York in Roses for the first time in three years has been difficult pill for the team to swallow. David Bruce, the Lancaster table tennis club president, said that “this year has been great, and we can be very proud of ourselves but there is always room for improvement and next year we want to build upon these two points and gain all 6 points!”

I can’t wait for next years Roses!

Roses 2012

On Saturday 5th May, Lancaster University Table Tennis Club takes on York in one of the fastest moving sports on earth. With 6 vital points at stake, players will be giving 100% to bring those points to Lancaster. Starting at 6 PM, it is one of the last events on Saturday and is situated just a stones throw from the Polo events.

There will be plenty of room for spectators to get a great view as players display a stunning array of shots from the sublime to the ridiculous. F.A.Q
Q: What is there for players who are county standard?
A: We participate in the BUCS Northern 2A division against strong opposition. We also participate in a high quality local league where our A team regularly challenges for the title. There is also opportunity to play in individual tournaments and we can provide strong players to regularly practise with.

Q: What if I have never played before?
A: Come along and see us during Freshers Fair and join us at our trials. Each week we hold a session for social members to have a bit of fun and get to know new people. If you want to learn more about how to play, we have experts willing to help you improve. We also run some great socials so watch out for them in the first few weeks of term.

Q: I want to play some competitive matches, what can you offer?
A: As we will have two teams in the BUCS league, there will be plenty of opportunity to play for the University. We also have 4 teams in the Local League meaning we need at least 12 players weekly to play matches for us. These matches take place both home and away.

Q: How do I get involved?
A: Come and see us during Freshers Fair, “Like” us on facebook (see sidebar), contact us through facebook or the contact form and most importantly come down and see us at the end of freshers week, more details to come!

I hope to see plenty of people during Freshers Week!

Social!!

Hey guys!

Here’s the first social of the year – A meal at Marco’s!

Last time we managed to get a pretty good deal which included a bottle of wine between two, some starters to share and a main course from a set menu, all for only 10 pounds per person! Hopefully we’ll get this deal again but I’m still waiting for the manager get back to us. Will let you know otherwise.

So the plan is to meet there at 7pm, have a meal, then we could go out afterwards if people want to (if a large number of us want to go then I’ll be able to get group tickets, so let me know if you want to) For those of you who haven’t been there before, it’s near sugarhouse.

Hope you can all come!

Please respond to the invitation on Facebook

Hey guys!

They Trials for the teams are on the 12th and 14th of October, so make sure you come along today if you want to play in the team! We have three different teams and now take on players of all standards. So come and have a go!

Freshers Fair and Activities Day

This year Freshers Fair starts on Thursday at 12 o’clock and you should come along to the stall and talk to the exec about the club! We will have leaflets and lots of friendly people who will be more than happy to explain what we do at the club.

On Wednesday, from 12o’clock,  there is also an opportunity to see the club during activities day or the activities showcase. This is where we attempt to do a demonstration and then we allow those who are keen to come and have a go themselves.

If you are thinking about joining the table tennis club make sure you make your way to either one of the above, it’ll be good to see you there!

TT Social

I’ve booked a table for Saturday 6th Feb, 7pm at Marcos Restaurant. Currently we’ve got 10 people going. I’ve managed to get the same offer as the Tennis club which is a selection of starters, a main course (either a pasta or pizza dish) and a bottle of red/white wine between two people for £10 each. I hope that’s okay with everyone! We can then see what everyone wants to do afterwards in terms of if were heading to some bars and clubs! Marcos is just further up from Sugarhouse and Elements as if your going away from Sainsbury’s. You’ve probably seen it before. There is a waiting area in the restaurant so if we meet just before.

If you haven’t told me already and you want to go then let me know asap!

Missed the trials?

Every year we take on a large number of people at the trials but many then don’t attend our sessions as they join other clubs or societies and can’t find the time when university work starts to mount up. Therefore if your interested in joining the club but either missed the trials or didn’t get a place then let me know that your interested in joining through the contact form on the right hand side.
